About ruby-throated hummingbirds
Ruby-throated hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) occur mainly in North and Central America. The male has a colourful plumage with a shimmering green back and a ruby-red throat. Despite its nimble size and weight (2-6 grams), it can fly surprisingly long distances in one stretch and, when hovering, it can beat its wings 80 times per second. Hummingbirds eat nectar from a variety of flower species but they also eat insects as a source of protein.
The ruby-throated hummingbird likes to visit gardens with an abundance of flowers or with sugar water feeders. All hummingbirds have short legs, which makes it difficult for them to stand or hop. They prefer being airborne and they can fly vertically, up, down and backwards as well as hover.
